Tropism of Mycoplasma gallisepticum for Arterial Walls ( encephalopathy / turkey / tylosin / pleuromutilin / brain )

چکیده
The fatal encephalopathy associated with M. gallisepticum strain S6 in turkey poults was completely curable by treatment with tylosin or pleuromutilin. The lesions of cerebral polyarteritis disappeared after therapy. Polyarthritis developed in some birds after recovery from encephalitis. Immunofluorescent studies revealed that intravenously injected organisms became localized as microcolonies within the walls of cerebral and periarticular arteries, and in the glomeruli. Turkey IgG deposition was demonstrated on the glomerular basement membranes, but not in the arterial lesions. The results suggest that the pathologic changes caused by this microorganism are due to selective localization and growth in arteries. Infection of turkeys by the S-6 strain of Mycoplasma gallisepticum is associated with extensive and remarkably selective lesions of polyarteritis nodosa, affecting almost exclusively the arteries of the brain (1, 2). Except for the relative paucity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, the lesions are morphologically similar to the necrotizing arteritis associated with experimental serum sickness. Living Mycoplasma is required for the production of arteritis; organisms disrupted by freeze-thawing or killed by heat are ineffective. Prior treatment with tetracycline provides complete protection against the disease (2). A neurotoxic factor, specific for turkey, has been demonstrated in concentrated suspensions of live Mycoplasma; antibiotic treatment also protects against this

In vivo efficacy of 81.723 hfu, a new pleuromutilin derivative against experimentally induced airsacculitis in chicks and turkey poults.
The efficacy of the pleuromutilin derivative 81.723 hfu was tested in chicks and turkey poults by experimentally infecting them with Mycoplasma gallisepticum. The data were treated to obtain the mean effective doses, and these were compared to those obtained with tylosin tartrate. The compounds were administered either by ingluvial catheter or via the drinking water. Therapy was started on the ...

The new pleuromutilin derivative 81.723 hfu is extremely active against gram-positive organisms such as streptococci, staphylococci, and against mycoplasmas. A number of Shigella, Klebsiella, and Escherichia coli strains were also found to be quite susceptible to this new agent, whereas other gram-negative organisms like Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus species, and Alcaligenes faecalis proved t...

Jungherr (1), in 1949, noted the occurrence of encephalitis during several outbreaks of the chronic respiratory disease (CRD) of turkeys, then considered to be a virus disease, and demonstrated necrotizing and inflammatory lesions of the cerebral arteries in affected birds. Adler et al. (2), in 1954, cultivated a mycoplasma, now designated Mycoplasma gallisepticum, from the tissues of turkeys w...

The in vitro activities of aivlosin tylosin tiamulin, erythromycin, oxytetracycline, spectinomycin, lincomycin, lincomycin-spectinomycin (1:2) and enrofloxacin were determined against twenty-eight isolates of Mycoplasma gallisepticum and 4 isolates of Mycoplasma synoviae using microbroth dilution method. The isolates showed various susceptibilities to antimicrobial agents. Aivlosin, lincomycin-...

Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) is economically important pathogen of poultry causes airsacculitis and frequently infraorbital sinusitis in turkeys. Infections may remain without clinical signs, but they can make birds susceptible to secondary infections. This study was carried out for molecular detection and phylogenetic analysis of MG infections in commercial and backyard turkey flocks ...
